What can I say other than, very interesting. A glimpse into another niche hobby and how that works. I had no idea about LEGO building before this...

I buy most of my bricks from http://www.bricklink.com/ which is a website that hosts several thousand online LEGO stores.

Some of the larger BrickLink sellers have inventories of millions of bricks, with tens of thousands of common bricks available for as little as 2 cents per brick. I also have an online store on BrickLink, but I focus on selling less common parts/colors in lower quantities.

I sometimes buy sets from the LEGO Shop At Home website. Usually the clearance items are a good deal, but otherwise the prices are rarely worth paying for shipping.

Finally, I buy some bricks retail at places like Walmart or Target, usually shortly before or after Christmas. LEGO sets are rarely discounted by retailers much at other times.

A sculpture like the LEGO Minifig Sculptures on my website cost about $40-$50 for bricks. Small mosaics like the video game 10 inch square ones cost about $15 for bricks.

Rare colors (like purple or pink) can push the price of bricks to three or four times as much, so I try to pick items that can be built mostly with more common colors.

Hope this helps!

Dave,

Could you give us an idea on how much materials would cost to buy LEGO's to build a full size 3d character? I don't know anything about being a serious LEGO guy, can you buy them in bulk for serious discounts online? How does all that work?

I agree the Pengo mosaic is a little crowded, but it did allow me to get 4 sprites in my limited 32x32 pixel baseplate.

A full screen shot mosaic would be cool, but it would be huge and require a ton of bricks. I would have to consider which game carefully since it would be a big time and materials commitment.

I just finished annother one of these mosaics, this time Super Mario Bros 3.
