NOS Cheyenne artwork may be scanned

Rich Lint told me that a guy who has both sides of sideart, NOS, may be willing to send them to Rich to get scanned. This is really Brian’s project but those two guys help each other out all the time so if Rich actually gets the artwork, he’ll scan and stitch together the left side and send it off to Brian. Whether he’ll actually get the artwork mailed to him is another thing….

However, Ryan left a comment in the translated (from French – Vectorzorg) arcade cabinet artwork scanning tutorial that he was attempted to scan the left side of his Cheyenne so this project could finally get finished (Check the comments). He mentioned that sliding the scanner up and down the vertical cabinet and positioning it with a dowel wasn’t working for him, but for the Cheyenne guys out there here’s hoping he figures out how to do it another way even if it means laying the cabinet flat.

If you remember, the potential for digital reproductions of Cheyenne sideart came up in April of 2008 and has been stalled since late last year. As I hear more, I’ll keep everyone posted.

I had written two months back in a post about the Exidy Cheyenne artwork that sold on eBay that the sideart is at a standstill. Everything is ready to roll with the right sideart, but Brian Jones still needs a scan / NOS piece of the left side of the cabinet to reproduce the set.

I don’t have any personal interest in this sideart for a machine myself so I haven’t been trying to hunt down a collector who has an NOS piece of the left side. I had mentioned in that previous post that I hoped someone would step forward. At the very least, someone could go through the list of Cheyenne owners on VAPS, no matter how outdated the VAPS list is, and see if one of the owners happens to have a piece of unapplied artwork or know someone who does. But, in the end, the fact is if you own this machine and you want to see this reproduced, you acquire a scan of the left side artwork. Interested parties know what Brian needs, it isn’t up to him to hunt it down.

Two months back I heard of a collector (Rick G.) who was a serious collector from 1995-2000 that was going to try to sell his collection of NOS arcade artwork, and it was a sizeable collection. If I remember right, he had both sides for a Cheyenne that he was looking to sell for a fair market price. If you know him you might contact him to see if that Exidy stuff is still for sale.

The other possibility is that Keith in PA at one time / still does have a lot of NOS Exidy artwork, and may have kept some for himself. Someone might get in touch with him to see if he has any Cheyenne that he might lend out to Brian Jones.

In the end it really comes down to those people that are interested in seeing this artwork reproduced. Anyone out there willing to take the ball and do a little legwork? Make this Cheyenne project happen? It’s up to you guys.

I will admit, I was a little surprised that this Cheyenne artwork didn’t go for a little more money. I was expecting the low $200 range but with economic strains on every other aspect of life, maybe hobbies have taken a hit. If we look back at the eBay results from a month ago on the NOS arcade artwork from the Quarter Arcade Warehouse Raid, sideart on more popular games was reaching $200 or more by itself.

In this case, I would say that Cheyenne has a limited popularity and following, maybe more so recently because of the Cheyenne reproduction sideart project that Brian Jones is currently working on. But when you add in an unapplied control panel overlay, and do an estimated 70/30 split on value, that would mean that at a final price of $190 that would mean that the sideart would be valued at about $135 and the overlay at about $55. That isn’t really that much, which is why I was thinking more like the $230 range, about $165 for the set of sideart and $65 for the overlay. Granted, I don’t know if Richard Ford or ‘Vectorcade’ were involved this time around, maybe they just drove the prices of the other arcade artwork higher than they actually were.

The beauty in the detail of the Cheyenne sideart

Speaking from an artistic standpoint, this Cheyenne artwork should be more collectible. If you look at the fine detail, composition, and illustration style as well as subject matter, this is a pretty cool piece.

Cowboys are as American as gangsters and McDonalds, but look closer at the fine detail of the illustration. The broken lines in the hair, the detail of the horses face, the use of negative space to imply the lasso and the monotone use in the background circle with the profiles of crooks on a wanted poster.

Plus, my favorite part may have been how Exidy chose to match the black in the background to the cabinet implying that the illustration was the only art on the cabinet, and the characters defining the shape of the artwork. I am sure they couldn’t put the artwork on the cabinet cut to shape for fear of kids picking it off, but this was the next best solution. Granted, having a solid black background on a piece of arcade artwork wouldn’t be as desirable collecting wise as a fully rendered desert scene, but this works for its original purposes.

We’ll see, I happen to hear about another set of Cheyenne sideart that may be coming up for sale in the next couple of weeks, or it may go to a private collector. Who knows, but I think that ‘bigmeat’ on eBay got a pretty decent deal. Sets of unapplied Cheyenne artwork aren’t impossible to find, this is the second this year that has come up for sale, and there is an image of a set of Cheyenne sideart from Arcade Mission as well from who knows when.

Update on Cheyenne sideart reproductions

Didn’t feel like this needed a separate post, but I checked in today on progress on the Cheyenne sideart. Back in late April, Brian Jones did some color matching on the Cheyenne sideart, printed out a test piece and sent one to the parties involved in the reproductions.

That piece of artwork was approved and is ready to roll. However, there was only the one side of the Cheyenne sideart, so a scan of the other side will need to be made in order to reproduce a set of artwork. A horizontal flip of the image might be possible if not for the ‘Reward’ and ‘Wanted’ text in the background circle.

Anyone out there have a piece of NOS Cheyenne sideart that hasn’t come forward yet but could help contribute to the reproduction project?

I got the file into the hands of someone whose solvent inkjet artwork is know to be top quality. I hope to have more details soon.

Brian Jones (Oleszak Creative – Game Stencils.com) cranked through the night, doing a ton of selections and Photoshop work to the original scan and meticulously printed and matched each color. Here we have a test print already, two different angles of the same sideart print adjusting for the photo flash. Great job Brian.

Brian says the blacks were a little off in the test prints, but the second test is adjusted, and the contour edge for die cutting the artwork has been drawn and is ready to go.

I’m getting there on Cheyenne. Wanted to get the Toobin’ Gators and Spy Hunter sideart out the door first, then finishing up cheyenne will happen. Very shortly!

This is a gorgeous piece of stylized, illustrated artwork. Right now I am evaluating the art close up, checking out the complexity, and the owner and I will have to work out getting this vectorized. It will take a lot of work just to vectorize it, let alone color separations and bleeds. Plus, who knows how expensive this piece of art will be to reproduce if screens can’t be combined to achieve some of the 8-9 different colors. For those of you who don’t know what Exidy’s Cheyenne artwork looks like I have included a thumbnail image of the file.

Don’t ask me for a copy of the file, I will not give it out to you. This is a private collector’s project and only he can determine distributing of the original artwork scan.

Hope to have more updates on the project moving forward later this week.
