Nintendo’s Donkey Kong is in the top 10 most popular arcade games of all time. One of the first platform games, Donkey Kong introduced gamers to Jumpman who we all know and love as Mario, as well as his damsel Pauline. This theme incorporates elements from the bezel artwork and has the option for multiple colors schemes including blue in commemoration of the original cabinet.

Instructions / Notes for this theme

First – I mention this later on, but I do provide free support for this theme. You will need to have a working knowledge of HTML and CSS, as well as some web development if you want to perform further testing for this theme in older browsers.

Again, I included a select set of arcade game marquees with this template. Feel free to spotlight your arcade collection how you like. Change out your own marquees into this space, but make sure the width of the graphic you make is 155px wide. This will keep the even spacing.

Based off the Mystique WordPress theme, you will find that the modifications I made are minor and that the theme has been vigorously tested by the original publisher, as it is listed in the WordPress theme repository.

I will be interested to hear feedback, but again, being a free theme ‘support’ is limited. The theme does work, but hasn’t been planned for each possible tiny modification that you may make to fit your needs. You will need a strong knowledge of HTML and cross browser compatibility using CSS layout to make some customizations.

Space Invaders Updated

With special effects. I had started to write this post last night, but it looks like Brian beat me to the punch, making an announcement about the new Game Stencils design at CoinOpSpace.

Brian wanted me to just come up with something for the main website header. The way the design turned out, I had to incorporate a nice realistic space background that would repeat without a seam. Was a little bit difficult but the results are cool.

This is a Space Invaders theme of sorts, since ‘theme’ seems to be the big buzzword today. Back in the day, three years ago, we just simply called these website designs, but I guess there is one difference. In the context of WordPress a theme is uniform across pages, very little change specific to each page.

In this case, Brian got hooked up with another collector, Jamie W. of Noiselandarcade. Jamie has developed a killer e-commerce package called Squirrelcart that has greatly helped me in my web consultant life. Jamie provides an iron proof shopping cart system with great support, which is was I need as a developer.

I have worked with a handful of e-commerce packages, and this is the best one I’ve used, plus it has support! Not a bunch of developers overseas not looking to interact with anyone. Plus Jamie is in the early stages of Beta testing for his new release which total ditches tables in favor of a much more flexible CSS based structure.

Simple themes you can implement

For Brian’s Space Invaders design, I just handed off the CSS and necessary HTML and some simple instructions and he plugged it in himself and made other necessary changes sitewide. Pretty simple. Short, easy, and well defined I just cranked this design project out really quick last week in a break from class work.

Super Bug was an interesting choice

But Super Bug is a kind of fun choice, and it was a fun project, not to mention cool that I got to work with a client overseas (Spain). The smoke in the artwork lent itself realy well as the main design element that could also act as an abstract background. Click the image to go to the website where the client installed the theme.

I haven’t done a ton of custom WordPress themes, you can check out the short list on my Arcade WordPress Themes page. But with hundreds of thousands of users of WordPress there is a great market for WordPress specific development. Well, the design ended up being pretty much only Missile Command artwork, you can only have so much arcade game artwork throughout one template without making it look too busy and poorly composed.

Generic arcade game marquees are included with this template. Most arcade game collectors have games they like to show off, and this is a common way to link to those games. Change out your own marquees into this space, but make sure the width of the graphic you make is 155px wide. This will keep the even spacing.

You will also want to try to keep the same dimensions for width and height with all of your marquees if used. This display uses a float, so if you start to get odd shaped arcade game marquees you will start to get a stacking effect. Change to taste.

  • Fixed a line of css code where the post footer wasn’t expanding the full width of the content and there was some wrapping.

This theme was based around another WordPress theme, so it is well tested but I am sure that there will be some small changes along the way to make this theme a little better. This is my first free theme, so I have some things to learn I am sure.

I will be interested to hear feedback, but since this is a free thing I don’t know how much time I will spend truly ‘supporting’ it. Rich has been great about getting me content in the past, and sending me some arcade goodies in the mail. Plus, every arcade game collector wants him to focus on what he does best, the screen printing of artwork, and produce as much product as possible. I was happy to help him redesign a page for his Donkey Kong 2 artwork package because it isn’t always easy to do everything – know great HTML, lay things out just the way you want, or really to have time to have a eye pleasing design.

Head over and check it out if you get a chance, I think you’ll like it. I would think some aspects about this web page design could be converted to a Donkey Kong 2 WordPress theme. But from the impression I got, more people would prefer a general theme based one company’s library of games, or a theme based on a type of game so a website wasn’t focused around one classic. I got two votes for Donkey Kong, so here is the first version of a Donkey Kong WordPress theme. Now I do want to hear from you. What would you like to see and keep these things in mind;

• This is a simple theme. I want to keep it that way, extra WordPress features can be added in by the user and customized.
• This template may or may not be for beginner’s. Some knowledge of html, css, WordPress and design in general is assumed.
• The watermark is there for obvious reasons

Features

• This template is widget ready

If you are an advanced user, you can make the custom text treatment. Otherwise, you will get a text treatment in your banner / header like the second image. Thanks to Rich for the font information for Donkey Kong.

I am curious for feedback. I won’t guarantee that I will use all of the ideas, but I think that the arcade collecting community will collectively have better ideas than just one person. Plus, these ideas can be carried through future designs. Leave a comment here on Rotheblog below about this arcade theme.

Update

I have heard the feedback, and I agree on one point. The light blue is iconic Donkey Kong. I used the Donkey Kong light blue in the bottom of the site, and it looks good and fits.

Now, if I haven’t listed your favorite arcade game here and you feel like there should be a WordPress theme for it, leave a comment instead below the poll. The arcade games listed here are some of the most popular and therefore most universal in interest. Plus, some classic game artwork doesn’t lend itself well to a WordPress template. Tron – yes. Sinistar – It could be done, but not as easily.

Oh, and I have purposely left off Pac-man (all variations) and Galaga for the obvious reasons. You can vote for them in the comments, but those votes will probably fall on deaf ears.

I’ll be curious to see the feedback.
