Alexander (2005)

There have been any number of large epics that have come out in the last six years. I always look at the previews and think, “Hey, that looks pretty cool”. I am such a tool. I always fall for it too. Big epic scenes, love, lust, violence, I can’t turn off the guy in me. I don’t think I have seen one that I liked, and Oliver Stone isn’t really known for his movies in the top 50 all time or anything. Usually they are too long and over dramatic with these possessed characters that no one can really relate to, only observe and feel distanced from on the sidelines.
That is what this movie is about. Colin Farrell is pretty good, if I knew anything about Alexander, but I don’t really care. He is just out there, and Jolie, yeah, I think I like her much better as a sexy intelligent lead role like Mr. Mrs. Smith. Not an object, but as an actress with delivery. This is just about her being a psycho no it all mother to Farrell who always stays way too young, but you could care less to hear what she has to say. It is always mind games and furthering her own goals.
Even if you were into mythology, gods, and all that hoopla, which is something I always “didn’t get” in high school, this does some of that, but not like Troy. It demonstrates some how the belief and fear of gods and history played into the lives of these characters, but not too much. I can’t recommend this to anyone, I don’t know the type that would like this. Probably the same person that liked the other recent epics, but be ready for a long one with a unique vision that only Oliver Stone could create. He should maybe stick to football movies, but even then the old time bit actors who always play the same role like Deniro ruin it. It is like a buddy system or something in hollywood, who keeps giving these people money?
Me.
